Canada SPP attracts students from India

Until April 2009, there was a big concern among Canadian colleges and universities of not getting students from India as most of the visas were being rejected by the Canadian High Commission, New Delhi. The Student Partners Program (SPP) commonly termed as Students Partnership Program by the students and study abroad consultants in India was implemented in partnership between the Canadian High Commission and the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) and is attracting a good number of students from all over India. At the time of writing this article on 23rd May 2011, the following colleges and universities were in the SPP list:
1.       Algonquin College
2.       Bow Valley College
3.       Cambrian College of Applied Arts & Technology

The students are cautioned to submit applications on time by 01 August for September intake and by 01 December for January intake while applying under SPP (Student Partners Program). It needs to be noted that SPP students apply to the participating college rather than the program.

To elaborate, SPP was started as a pilot project with plans to test a model for expediting the student visa process and delivering higher approval rates while maintaining program integrity. All Study Permit application checklists have been revised and improved as a result of the SPP framework to help students make simpler applications and Canadian High Commission informed decisions.

  6. Student Partnership Program SPP? Is the program applicable for Chinese students applying from Canadian High Commissions in China? Please let me know

    ReplyDelete
  7. China is the top source country for students studying in Canada with almost 50,000 Chinese students residing in Canada in 2009. The SPP was developed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) in cooperation with the ACCC and announced on 14th September 2010 to be applicable for Chinese students. The program is based on the highly successful SPP implemented in India last year. In the first year of its implementation, the number of Indian students studying in Canada jumped from just over 7,300 in 2008 to nearly 9,600 in 2009. The program has several checks and balances, from requiring applicants to provide verifiable documentation, to a feedback mechanism where colleges report on whether students attend. All students who come to Canada through the SPP must adhere to the same screening requirements as any visitor or student.

  9. Rajni Bhatla, Director of Kampus Landing a leading overseas education consultant from Gujarat says, “There is a northward trend on the number of Indian students showing interest in studying in Canada. SPP requires students to have IELTS scores only. TOEFL is not valid for filing student visa under SPP though the students are eligible to file under general category. Strangely, even the Canadian colleges and universities prefer IELTS and students with TOEFL score find very few choices. We have experienced almost 100% success rate with IELTS but somehow students filing under general category with TOEFL scores have been scrutinized closely by Canadian High Commission and even the brightest of the students have faced rejection. You are strongly advised to file under Student Partners Program and avoid filing with TOEFL scores under general category.”

Further, Rajni Bhatla says, “The quality of education is very good in all community colleges and one should not rush just to Toronto or Vancouver, there’s a lot of advantages studying at provinces in Quebec and Manitoba. The students’ Canada PR application is fast tracked if filed under Provincial Nominee Program.”

Regarding mature students applying under SPP, Rajni Bhatla says, “Canada welcomes mature students’ applications, one can file at the age of 35 but should have a genuine reason to study at this age in Canada. If the mature student is not able to provide ample of evidence, the application is more likely to be rejected. We have had several applications between 30 and 35 which have successfully received Canada student visas under SPP and are presently studying in Canada.”

On the question on ethics of study abroad consultants in India, Rajni says, “The study abroad consulting industry in India is not regulated like China and UAE where study abroad consultant needs a license by the Ministry of Education to operate. The Indian Government needs to regulate the study abroad consulting industry and save hundreds from being duped by unscrupulous agents.”

She adds, “After successfully experimenting SPP in India, Canadian government has initiated the Student Partners program SPP in China. There are already 50,000 students from China studying in Canada and the number is expected to grow tremendously.”

Student Partners Program popularly known as SPP has come as a boon for Indian students. Before its inception, the Canadian student visas were difficult to get but now the situation is different. The finance requirements for applying a Canadian student visa under Student Partners Program (SPP) are minimal and the student from middle class family is also able to fulfill the same.

On the contrary, the USA Consulates in India of late has not been so liberal in issuing visas to Indian students. The Visa Officers at the US Consulate have been quite selective in issuing the F1 visas; the visas have been granted to the academic sound students with capability to fund their studies and stay in the USA.

At Kampus Landing, we have a very good success rate in USA student visas (F1 visas) as well as Canada student visas under SPP.

You may visit us to discuss your particular case and we'll be happy to advise you appropriately.

For accurate information, I'll suggest you to visit a study abroad consultant who is authorized by Government of Canada and member of ICCRC.

    CANADA CALLING

Easy PR rules and jobs attracts Indian students to British Columbia,Saskatchewan and Manitoba

Earlier,Indian students used to choose Toronto in Canada because of the job opportunities and the Indian community stronghold in this city. However, now Indian students are breaking grounds and heading to colleges in British Columbia,Saskatchewan,Manitoba and some very cold provinces.Sanjay Laul,President and Founder of Kampus Landing,a study abroad consulting organisation with offices in USA,Canada and India says,"The quality of education is very good in all Canadian community colleges and one should not rush just to Toronto. There are many advantages of studying at provinces in British Columbia,Saskatchewan and Manitoba. While the students' Canada PR applications are fast tracked if filed under Provincial Nominee Program,Manitoba and Saskatchewan require minimum 8 months of study and British Columbia requires 12 months of study at Diploma or higher level to file for PR under Provincial Nominee Programs in comparison to Ontario which requires a student to complete a Masters or a PhD to file under its PNP.Most of the Indian students who complete their Diploma or Post Graduate Diploma from a community college in Toronto relocate to Saskatchewan to become eligible for PR.The Saskatchewan Graduate Retention Program (GRP) provides eligible graduates with a refundable income tax credit to rebate, over seven years, upto $20,000 of tuition fees they have paid if they move to or live in Saskatchewan."
Regarding mature students applying under SPP,Sanjay Laul says,"Canada welcomes mature students' applications. One can file at the age of 35 but should have a genuine reason to study at this age in Canada. If the mature student is not able to provide ample evidence, the application is more likely to be rejected. We have had several applications between 30 and 35 which have successfully received Canada student visas under SPP and are presently studying in Canada."
On the trend of hiring a consultant for filing a study permit,Sanjay Laul says,"The Canadian Government encourages the use of licensed consultants only. So,the students and parents need to check whether the consultant is a member of Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council - ICCRC or not.It is then only that the consultant can represent the student application at CIC."
