American Education System

Generally children in USA start school at the age of five years which is also known as kindergarten. The second year at school is considered is known as first grade. In America, the word grade has two meanings: (1) the score achieved on an exam or in a course, and (2) a year of education in primary or secondary school.Primary school most commonly consists of fifth grades i.e five yearsof education.

Secondary school
Upon completion of fifth grade (the last year of primary school), American children studying in the American education system enters into secondary school. Secondary school most commonly consists of a total of seven years, referred to as sixth through twelfth grades. The ninth through twelfth grades are most commonly referred to as high school. After completing the twelfth grade, American students are awarded a certificate called the high school diploma. In the American education system, students must have obtained a high school diploma before they are admitted into college or university. Foreign students who would like to attend an American college or university must have completed coursework that is equivalent toeducation programme in an  American high school.
Undergraduate school
Students who would like to attend college or university must attend what is referred to as an undergraduate school. These are schools that offer either a two-year degree (called an associate degree) or a four-year degree (called a bachelors degree) in a particular course of study. That course of study is called the major.Alll students are required to select (or declare) a major by their second year at school. Students who complete an associate degree can continue their education at a four-year school and eventually complete a bachelor degree.

Graduate school
Students who have obtained a bachelor’s degree can continue their education by going through one of two types of degrees. The first is a master’s degree. This is generally a two-year degree in a highly specialized  specific field. Students are sometimes admitted to a master’s degree program only if they have a bachelor’s degree in a closely related field. However, there are few  exceptions like the students want to study a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) degree. Certain courses of study are only available at the graduate school level in America. The most important are of  law, dentistry, and medicine. Students who want to go through degree in one of these fields must first obtain a bachelor’s degree.

  1. Barack Obama wants to reform the American education system

President Barack Obama has lifted the curtain Saturday on his plan to improve the American educational system, wishing to reward the best schools rather than punish the worst performers.
The head of the White House, which intends to reform the 2002 law on education advocated by former President George W. Bush plans to assist American students to catch up on school youth in other countries.
Under the plan advocated by Barack Obama, the education officials would depart to the penalty imposed on schools that do not meet standards to reward schools making progress, particularly with students from a poor background or a minority.
The proposed changes call for states to adopt criteria that would ensure youth are prepared for graduate study or careers.
“If we do not (…), countless children will never make it into account their talent and potential,” said Barack Obama in a speech Saturday. “I do not accept this future for them. And I do not accept this future for the United States of America.”
The head of the White House intends to send Congress on Monday a text with modifications to current law.
The project would also allow states to take up other subjects as reading and mathematics through measurements to meet federal goals, which would satisfy many groups believing that the law “No Child Left Behind” (no child ignored) encourages teachers not to focus on the history, art, science, social studies and other matters of importance.
For the first time in 45 years, the White House also proposes an increase of four billion dollars of federal spending on education.
The project must be presented on Wednesday before the Committee on Education and Labor of the House of Representatives.

  2. The American education system allows credit transfers from one university to another ie the student can transfer to another university and still graduate within a reasonable time. The students can enroll in a new university before finishing a degree and the credits earned at the first school can be used to complete a degree at the new one in the stipulated time.

  3. It is important to understand the terminology used in US higher education system. The 4 year undergraduate program consists of:

1st Year which is called Freshman Year.
2nd Year which is called Sophomore Year.
3rd Year which is called Junior Year.
4th Year which is called Senior Year.

  4. There is a difference in Community College and regular four year College/University in the United States.

Community colleges are run by state government and meet the educational and vocational needs of local communities. With low tuition fee and less entry requirements, it is open for all. The US universities on the other hand are offer wide range of courses and have tougher eligibility criterion for admissions. The advantages of a Community College over university are Admission is easily available, low tuition fee, smaller in size, availability of teachers and advisors are able to provide personal attention to the students, supporting environment.
